Bristol City Council BNET initiative brings low cost, high speed Internet connectivity
Local network services firm HNS selected to manage new BNET Gigabit Internet service
Bristol-based Hub Network Services (HNS), a leading wholesale Internet service and network communications infrastructure company, today announced it has been selected as the wholesale provider of Bristol City Council’s new BNET duct fibre communications network.
Set to deliver low cost, secure, high speed Gigabit Internet connectivity to thousands of businesses in the Bristol area, this follows HNS’ appointment by ITS Technology Group, a nationwide public sector IT services company, following an agreement between ITS and Bristol City Council, to an exclusive 20-year concession to develop the BNET network.
The two firms already work closely together to make affordable high-quality Internet connectivity easily accessible to local businesses. This is in line with the Council’s objective of leveraging its existing duct infrastructure for providing commercial services across the area that directly contribute to economic growth. As a revenue sharing initiative, a proportion of the income received by the Council from businesses using the BNET service, will be used for the funding of other important local services.
Approximately 80 Km’s in length, the BNET duct network carrying the high-speed fibre optic cabling already covers most of Bristol, extending from Filton in the North to Keynsham and Long Ashton in the South. With plans to expand the fibre footprint by an additional 96 Km’s, businesses further afield can also expect to benefit from having low latency fibre optic connections directly to their premises.

BNET is available immediately to businesses from just £350 per month (RRP) for a fully managed and supported 1 Gb/s service. HNS are recruiting a number of locally-based IT support and telecom reseller firms to accelerate roll out of the new BNET service. Business customer and reseller partners will be supported by HNS’ 24/7/365 in-house network monitoring and support team.
The B-Net (Bristol Network) ducting and fibre communications network is owned by Bristol City Council which it purchased more than 15 years ago, from Rediffusion, a cable TV pioneer. Used to support the Council’s ICT requirements including telephony, data, traffic related network and CCTV, the network and fibre optic cabling has been continuously enhanced and expanded.
